Why Is My Car Cranking But Not Starting?
Your car not starting is a huge inconvenience, and no one has time for that. We’ve talked about batteries and starting issues before. When a car will turn over or crank but not start, that’s not typically a battery issue.
The engine in your automobile requires all the systems to work in order for it to start and run. While these systems can be complex, they can be categorized into four simple functions.
Fuel, air, spark, and compression. If your fuel injectors aren’t supplying fuel to the engine, then there is nothing for the engine to ignite. There is a pump and filter that supplies the fuel to those injectors, and the computer controls all of it. If anything fails, then fuel won't be sent to the injectors.
If your air filter is plugged, then the engine can’t breathe properly and won’t be able to burn the fuel. Also, a sensor that monitors the air intake could fail, making the engine think it's not getting air even if it actually is.
Spark is used to ignite the fuel in your engine and create the power to start and run. Spark plugs do wear and fail over time. There are also sensors and components that control spark that can cause problems.
And finally, compression. This is not a part but a function of a few parts. Your engine takes that air and fuel mixture and compresses it in the cylinder with the piston and crankshaft. As it is being compressed, the spark plug ignites the mixture, causing a small explosion. That is why gasoline and diesel engines are also called internal combustion engines (I.C.E.)
If a piston or the rings on the piston have damage or the gaskets around the cylinder have failed, combustion gasses can leak and cause your engine to not run.
As you can see, making an engine run has a lot of moving parts, and if any of those don’t happen at just the right time, then it won’t be able to run.
